ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT OFFICER BASIC LEADERSHIP COURSE (OBLC)

This is a resident course that trains newly commissioned Army Reserve officers to function effectively in their first Army Medical Department duty position. Each session lasts 25 days and is offered five times a year. The intention of the course is to train officers to develop:

  • Competency to perform officer/soldier skills to standard
  • An understanding of Army organizations, operations, and procedures
  • An ability to apply the concepts of health protection for our soldiers and leadership skills
  • An ability to communicate, interact and coordinate as a staff member
  • Military survival skills for the contemporary operating environment
  • Army Medical Department-specific training which culminates in a Force Health Protection field training exercise.

Three field training exercises lasting four to five days each are conducted at the Camp Bullis training area in Texas. You will be transported there from Fort Sam Houston, which is located approximately 25 miles south of the camp. While at Camp Bullis, you’ll live and work under “field” conditions, which include setting up and working in a field hospital or medical equivalent, sleeping in tents, dining in mess halls, and other considerations. During the course, you will be exposed to weapons training, day and night land navigation, communications training, basic first-aid training, evacuation of casualties and Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) training. The training culminates with a hands-on testing of tasks learned throughout the course.
